We have a Lange contrabassoon from the early 1900s available for $37,000! It's a wonderful Heckel like instrument, used for many years in the L.A. studios and heard on some famous movie sound tracks.
Our understanding is that Lange worked at Heckel, then started making instruments under his own name. A lawsuit ensued and he stopped making instruments.

Mr. Arbiter provides "a comprehensive yet accessible overview of the craft [of reed making], from the differing sound qualities produced by changing the dimensions of the reed's blades to the changes in the reed's behaviors as it passes through cycles of wetting and drying during production". Contains step by step instructions, 221 photos, musical examples, graphs and charts. There is also a companion website which includes sound clips from his performances with the Houston Symphony demonstrating what the reeds sound like. Paperback, 368 pages.
